Substance doesn’t wear a face,
It finds its way through every space.
Behind the desk, beneath the tie,
It walks the halls we pass right by.
A silent plague, a social wound,
It’s not out loud, but quietly attuned.
But it’s not the drugs that stake their claim,
But society’s shame and silence fan’s the flame.
We point and judge without a glance,
Denying pain its rightful chance.
But stigma builds a heavy wall,
It makes the brave afraid to make the first call.
This has got to change.
Words like “alco” or “junkie” sting,
They cut the air and clip their wings.
They strip away a lifeline strong,
Reinforcing the belief that they don’t belong
They’re punished when they need support,
With empathy left, lay bare to distort.
And then we wonder why they hide.
When their chance of healing has been denied?
Let’s look beyond the buts and lies,
The “maybes” and doubts
And instead, ask ourselves the hardest “why”
That’s where the real solutions lie.
Together, we can build a community.
Where empathy thrives and stigma dies.
Where healing’s not a lonely fight,
But wrapped in care and welcomed light.
Together, we can turn the tide,
Replace indifference with genuine pride.
Let’s rise with those who’ve been unheard,
Restore their voice and help renew their world.
So, if you have a heart, please play your part.
Pledge your support to Sheffield’s inclusive recovery city campaign.
Because in this fight, we all belong, and together, we’ll grow a city strong.
At the same time….
Prove all the naysayers and doubters wrong.
